Burglary suspect found dead in flipped-over car after fleeing from police in The Heights: HPD
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A burglary suspect was found dead in a flipped-over car on Saturday morning after police say he fled from officers in The Heights.
According to the Houston Police Department, a security guard at the Lenox Timbergrove apartment complex on West 11th Street near Ella spotted someone breaking into vehicles at about 4 a.m. and called 911.
Authorities said they saw surveillance footage of the suspect going floor to floor of the parking garage, pulling on handles. He got inside a car at one point and took some items, police said.
When officers arrived, they said the suspect turned off his lights to avoid being seen.
Police said they followed the suspect out of the garage and put on their emergency lights and sirens to pull the suspect over.
The driver then sped away, and officers lost sight of the vehicle, police said.
Officers said they later found the vehicle flipped over and on fire. The person was found dead inside the vehicle.
Investigators said the suspect was going well over 70 mph when he hit elevation on Nicholson Street and 11th and flew 15 to 20 feet into the air. As the driver lost control, the vehicle bounced, rolled over, hit a tree, and caught fire, police said.
An investigation is ongoing.
